Bake it til you make it

Gold Whisks say what?

There are some exciting things happening here at BITYMI. The website has undergone continuous tinkering since the blog was launched two months ago. Because of that there has been very little writing on the site as far as baking content.

 

But that is about to change! Four key things are happening within the next few months:

 

1) The blog will be updated three to seven times a week with baking (and cooking) and a little political content.

 

2) The Tip of the Day will be a mixed media blog that will not necessarily be daily (probably two or three tips a week is more like it) but will feature both video and written tips for baking, cooking and living well.

 

3) BITYMI TV will feature how-to videos and interviews with various bakers and chefs in the NYC area.

 

4) And the most exciting thing about BITYMI is that starting mid-summer we will launch the BITMI Bakery Review featuring reviews of bakeries in the New York City area (and later, other cities). The bakeries  will be awarded up to four “Gold Whisks” based on a number of criteria (Watch your back, Zagat!).

Happy Cake

Yesterday my baby brother turned nineteen. To celebrate my mother commissioned her favorite baker to create a cake. If you didn't guess, yours truly is her favorite baker and I decided to make a Deep  Dark Chocolate Cheesecake that I found in the October/2006 issue of Bon Appetit. Since my brother is a freshman at NYU I decided to take it to his dorm myself.

I learned something while delivering the cake. Cake makes people happy. I mean really, really happy. Two construction workers yelled (in a happy way) to give them a slice. A woman, while we were waiting to cross the street, told me that my cake looked delicious and she wished she had some.

If I had a overstuffed backpack, a ski-mask with sunglasses on, red and green wires dangling out of my pockets and there was a strange ticking noise coming out of my coat, no one would have given me a second look. But carrying a cake through the streets of New York generated a response -- a positive response that made me feel good about my cake and my baking business.

Dear  BITYMI reader,

I have a secret. In fact only my closest friends know what it is. I have carried this secret for such a long time and have wished that I could, with grace and decorum, admit my problem and get it out in the open. Then, perhaps, someone could help me.
